SP1008 Series TVS Diode Arrays Safely Absorb Repetitive ±15kV ESD Strikes in a Miniature 0201 Footprint, Ensure Greater ESD Protection for Space-Limited Applications

CHICAGO - September 6, 2012 – Littelfuse, Inc., the global leader in circuit protection, has developed a new line of transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes for general purpose ESD protection applications. SP1008 Series TVS Diode Arrays (SPA™) are capable of protecting chipsets up to ±15kV with a low dynamic resistance of 1.3 ohms, providing superb clamping performance in a very space efficient footprint. These robust diodes can safely absorb repetitive ESD strikes (±15kV contact discharge) without performance degradation above the maximum level specified in the IEC61000-4-2 international standard. An economical 0201 flipchip package makes the SP1008 Series a good choice for general purpose ESD protection.

 

The back-to-back configuration of the SP1008 Series provides symmetrical ESD protection for data lines and can be used when AC signals are present. They are well suited for use in applications in which board space is at a premium, such as smartphones, mobile phones, tablet devices, portable navigation devices, digital cameras, and portable medical devices. Typical circuits to be protected against ESD include keypads, buttons, switches, and low-speed I/Os (audio, analog video, etc.).

 

The SP1008 Series TVS Diode Arrays (SPA™) offer manufacturers and designers of mobile or consumer electronic a variety of key benefits:

 

•They provide excellent clamping performance of 10.7V due to their low dynamic resistance of 1.3Ω.

• They exceed the highest level of the IEC61000-4-2 standard (Level 4, ±8kV) by surviving a minimum of ±15kV (contact discharge) without performance degradation to ensure enhanced ESD protection.

• Their highly efficient design footprint saves valuable board space and allows for greater layout flexibility.

• Their low leakage current (0.1μA max at 5V) minimizes drain and increases battery life in battery-powered applications.

 

Chad Marak, the Littelfuse product manager for this line, notes, “The SP1008 Series offers some important advantages to designers over other TVS Diode Arrays on the market, particularly its lower capacitance (9pF vs. 12pF), higher ESD rating (15kV vs. 8kV), and lower clamping (10.7V vs. 11.5V), all of which are important for those who test their systems beyond the IEC 61000-4-2 specification.”

 

The SP1008 Series is available as a space efficient 0201 flipchip (0.62x0.32x0.28mm) and is sold in reels of 10,000 each. Samples are available through Littelfuse sales representatives.
